In 1975, Dr. Gerald “Jerry” Jampolsky, a Stanford-educated child and adult psychiatrist, began his journey toward sobriety and another way of looking at the world. After a life-changing spiritual experience, Jerry was inspired to create a small center dedicated to helping children facing life-threatening illnesses. While offering his support to this small group of children, he discovered that they, in turn, were helping him confront his own fear of dying. This exchange of giving and receiving became one of the core concepts of this work.

The original Center for Attitudinal Healing was established in Tiburon, California, located on the dock on San Francisco Bay. From there, the creation of the very first Peer Support Group model emerged, welcoming siblings, parents, adolescents, and adults dealing with illnesses like cancer and later, AIDS, as well as those facing everyday life-changing situations. The nonsectarian philosophy of Attitudinal Healing emphasizes that all are welcome, and the multiple services and programs have remained free of charge to this day.

In 1981, I joined Jerry, and together we spent the next 40 years traveling the globe in response to requests from over 60 countries. We shared the Principles of Attitudinal Healing and helped communities adapt the work in culturally appropriate ways. The bounty of positive, diverse media coverage throughout the years as well as our numerous books, presentations, and Center trainings have helped bring awareness to the power of personal transformation inspired through Attitudinal Healing.

In 2006, I founded Attitudinal Healing International to continue supporting the independent Centers located around the world. Through this organization, we are able to ensure that the transformative work of Attitudinal Healing continues to remain available to people worldwide, helping them face life's choices, challenges, and changes with peace, inner strength, and acceptance..

All Centers are staffed primarily by volunteers and funded solely by donations. The first Centers’ impact extended beyond their local community. Over the decades, Attitudinal Healing has expanded to hospitals, schools, businesses, governments, prisons, organizations, etc., inspiring additional independent, culturally appropriate Centers that reach a global audience. Now, after 50 years, Attitudinal Healing International continues to flourish and grow, with a presence on 6 continents.
